Luxury Travel Advisor Liz Manning escorted a group of first-time visitors on a wonderful Rhine River cruise. Not only did Uniworld’s S.S. Antoinette provide a unique perspective of Europe’s most famous cities, seeing them through the eyes of new visitors was invigorating. Embark on your European escapade and see for yourself why this experience is not to be missed!
There's arguably no more important waterway in Europe, nor does any other river in the world host as many famous cities on its banks. Flowing through six countries, the Rhine River has served as an important link between north and south since Roman times. Descending from the Swiss Alps, the river runs about 800 miles south through Europe, becoming a busy industrial artery from Basel on.
Cruising the Rhine River Valley, with Germany on one side and France on the other, will dazzle you with its history and natural sights. Meander through steep-sided valleys, home to renowned vineyards, mighty castles, and picturesque towns. Sip on Riesling in Germany, enjoy a delicate tart in France, and sample fresh cheese in Switzerland, wherever your countryside pursuits take you on this cruise, they will surely be palate-pleasing and picture-perfect!
Liz’s adventure began with three days in Amsterdam, complete with a private guide for a truly unique perspective into this intriguing city. From a private canal cruise to a behind the scenes tour of the Anne Frank House, you’ll feel like you have the city to yourself.
With so many fascinating museums, it’ll be hard to choose just one, but Liz recommends a tour of Rijksmuseum. And of course, what is a visit to Holland without a stop in the Dutch countryside to see some windmills? Zaanse Schans provides ample opportunities for the perfect photo!
While Liz’s group had a fantastic time onboard, many of the highlights occurred on their distinctive excursions. They especially enjoyed a private tour and tasting at the Doktorenhof Vinegar Estate. Learn about the vinegar making process and head home a vinegar connoisseur with plenty of souvenirs to back you up.
Hello Switzerland! After the cruise, Liz toured Zurich with a private driver and guide, then boarded the train for Chur. Her group spent a few fun-filled days traveling by rail around the towns that dot the mountainside before embarking on the Bernina Express Alps rail.
You’re already in Europe – why not make the most of it? Continue on to Italy and spend a few days on Lake Como or Venice, or both! No matter how many days you tack on, you’ll still begrudgingly board your return flight – trust us.
